I wouldn't call him a jerk, he's just doing what he has to do to beat his brother. That's his only real goal in life after all. BTW, 1000 messages. woot woot.

I said it because it's the anime section and because that's why he left the Leaf village in the first place. There's no way to defend what he's doing now in the manga because we don't really know what he's up to.
